LTE -- Coal no answer for 'clean' energy

February 6, 2007

Having listened to the president's State of the Union address I want to
point out that his plan for energy independence, insofar as it contains
"clean coal" ( a real oxymoron), is simply trading one ill for another.

Burning coal causes carbon emissions and leads to global warming, as well as
air pollution and mercury in our waters. The Bush administration has rolled
back requirements on emissions on all but totally new coal-fired plants.

We need renewable energy and we need to reduce consumption.

Des Moines.
