MUSCATINE: A blocked sewer line in a Muscatine neighborhood sent untreated wastewater overland before it went back into an underground sewer line Friday.
An unknown amount of wastewater was released in a wooded area near the intersection of Logan and Cedar Streets. The discharge was short-lived, beginning around noon and ending when the city unplugged the line about 1:20 p.m.
The city's quick response and liming of the area should help protect residents, but children and pets should be kept away from the affected area for about 48 hours.
The city also notified residents in the area and took water samples upstream and downstream of the clogged pipe.
