MARQUETTE — A train derailment Thursday afternoon in Clayton County has resulted in a large amount of soybean meal reaching a trout stream.

According to DNR staff, three or four train cars came to rest in Bloody Run Creek near Monona and Marquette, spilling soybean meal into the stream. While DNR staff has not observed dead fish, the soybean meal could affect oxygen levels in the stream. It is not known how much soybean meal reached the stream.

Iowa, Chicago and Eastern Railroad Corporation is removing the rail cars and soybean meal from the creek on Friday. The DNR will continue to investigate and monitor the stream during the weekend.

DES MOINES — Heavy rains Thursday night have led a number of Iowa communities to bypass wastewater.

In Montgomery County, the City of Stanton began bypassing untreated wastewater from its main lift station to the Tarkio River at 11:50 p.m. Thursday. As of 8:00 a.m. Friday, the city had discharged about 47,000 gallons of wastewater. The bypass is ongoing. The DNR will work with the city to evaluate the pumping capacity of the lift station.

The City of Stuart in Adair County began bypassing partially treated wastewater overnight Thursday. The bypass is reaching Long Branch Creek, which flows into Diamondhead Lake. Diamondhead Lake officials have been notified of the bypass. The city is bypassing at a rate of 800,000 gallons per day. The bypass is ongoing.

In Jefferson County, the City of Fairfield bypassed 270,000 gallons of untreated wastewater between 3:30 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. Friday. The city discharged the wastewater to tributaries of Crow Creek and Cedar Creek.
