Ironman announced Wednesday that Des Moines will be the newest host of a
full-distance Ironman triathlon. The new full-distance Ironman triathlon
will take the place of the Ironman 70.3 triathlon and be designated as the
2022 Ironman North American Championship . In October of 2019 Ironman
Louisville canceled the swim portion of the triathlon because of algae
blooms in the Ohio River. Let's hope that the same does not happen again.
In August of 2020 The Des Moines River was “essentially unusable” as a
drinking water source for 500,000 central Iowans because of toxins from
algae, leaders of the Des Moines Water Works said.
