BULLETIN!!
Well, finally, the Republican majority in the Iowa Legislature has released
their budget targets for the 2003 Budget. Grim!
You recall the Governor reduced his 2003 budget asking by $142 million two
weeks ago. The GOP targets are set $175 million below his revised budget.
Their targets reduce the Ag/Natural Resources subcommittee spending target
by about $.5 million. Bad, but could have been much worse. And, most of DNR
is not General Fund dollars, so not so affected by this.
They would reduce $70 million out of the Department of Human Services
budget, and about $2 million out of the departments funded by the Health &
Human Rights budget subcomm.
Details are not available as yet, of course, and we will hear about those in
budget subcommittee meetings and conversations over the next few days.
I will of course keep you posted as this progresses. It is bound to not be
pretty! More later.
Lyle
