Ice" or "Being Caribou" before Arctic Action Day March 12. . Phyllis
If you would like to show either “Being Caribou” or “Oil on Ice” there is
still time to get a copy before Arctic Action Day.
Just give me a call or email and specify if you want “Being Caribou” on
VHS or DVD. “Oil on Ice” only comes on DVD.
Also, if you already have a screening planned (no matter how big or
small), please email me the details: date, time, place so we can keep
track of how many showings are taking place.
The timing on this is going to be awesome – there’s a strong possibility
that this could come to a vote the week of March 14 as Congress debates
their budget bills.

March 12 is Arctic Action Day — Make Popcorn and Take Action for the
Arctic Refuge!
Hello. Arctic Action Day is March 12 and Being Caribou, the full-length,
award-winning film, is the tool being used by environmental groups and
individuals across Canada and the U.S., to take action. Approximately 1.5
million people (including you) across both countries have been asked to
beg, borrow or buy a copy of the film from the National Film Board of
Canada (NFB), and host a screening in their living room, coffee shop,
school, library or other community venue on or around March 12.
It's easy!
1. Visit www.beingcaribou.com and click on TAKE ACTION.
2. Follow the steps and beg, borrow or buy a copy of Being Caribou from
the NFB (online purchasing is easy), or, if you're in Canada and
organizing a public screening, contact [log in to unmask] for a loan
copy and pre-printed posters. If you're in the U.S. and organizing a
public screening, contact [log in to unmask] If you need more
information, contact us.
3. Email the place, town, date, time of your screening (livingroom or
bigger) to [log in to unmask]
4. As close as possible to March 12, share the film with friends,
neighbours and community — whatever you have the time and energy for.
5. Make popcorn.
6. Have everyone visit www.beingcaribou.com to TAKE ACTION to write a
letter to their local representatives. On www.beingcaribou.com, you will
find an action centre for Canadian letter-writers, as well as links for
U.S. letter-writers to reach their Senators and Congress people. Our
sample letter for Canada, as well as Robert Redford's letter, provide a
good basis for peoples' own letters.
7. Send this email to family, friends + local environmental groups and
encourage them to host a livingroom, school or community screening.
8. If you have the ability to publicize Arctic Action Day on the radio,
television or local newspapers, please do.
The response so far is overwhelming and our hope is this film will help
create a flood of letters to Congress people, Senators, MPs and the Prime
Minister, that convey the strength with which Canadians and Americans
feel the Refuge should be permanently protected — at a time when it is in
seriously serious danger of being opened by the U.S. to oil and gas
development. This despite the fact Canada and the U.S. actually have an
agreement to protect the Porcupine Caribou Herd and its habitat
(www.canadianembassy.org/environment/caribou-en.asp)!
Karsten Heuer and Leanne Allison migrated with the Porcupine Caribou Herd
from Old Crow to the calving grounds in the Arctic National Wildlife
Refuge and back again from April to September 2003. It took 5 months and
was an intense and illuminating journey. This was Being Caribou, the
expedition. Afterward, Leanne teamed up with the National Film Board and
Artemis Films to turn her footage into Being Caribou, a funny,
compelling, intimate, full-length film of the journey. Being Caribou was
released last September and has won awards at festivals across Canada and
the United States.
