     Sierra Club Job Description

     Job Title: Outdoor Activities Training Manager
                (Limited Duration ends 12/15/00)

     Department:    Outings/San Francisco

     Reports To:    Dirctor of National Outings

     Supervises:     None

     Context:       Works with program managers to identify training
strategies
and needs, develop
training curriculum, recruit volunteer and professional trainers, and to
set up
and oversee training events (leader and chair) for the three major Outdoor
Activity programs: Group and Chapter Outings(GCO), Inner City Outings
(ICO), and
National Outings (NO). Identifies Outdoor Activity policy deficiencies and
educates leaders on current policies.

     Scope:     Works extensively with staff and volunteer
                outings leaders to establish and implement training
programs,
identify internal and external training resources, develop training
                    materials, and coordinate and conduct training
sessions.
Works with program managers and volunteers to define policies and integrate
them
into training programs.


Job Activities:

     1. Develops volunteer leader and chair training curriculums and
materials
for the GCO, ICO and NO programs to meet risk management, conservation,
leadership, policy and membership recruitment needs. Works with program
managers
to set training goals, focusing on common training needs.

     2. Works with program managers and volunteers to define Outdoor
Activity
policies. Highlights deficiencies in policies and recommends changes to
them.
Communicates changes in policies and procedures to volunteer leadership
through
training programs. Identifies opportunities to change methods of
distribution to
leadership.

     3. Identifies training resources including staff, volunteer, and
commercial
providers. Works with staff and volunteer trainers to verify and augment
their
training skills and credentials.  Provides materials and instruction on how
to
conduct training sessions. Sets up commercial training provider contracts
as
needed.  Obtains, develops, and publishes training materials, ensuring
consistency with policies and procedures.  Makes training materials
available
through various media outlets including the web.

     4. Organizes and conducts leader and chair training sessions.
        Deals with all logistics related to scheduling trainers, recruiting
participants, and setting up facilities.  Attends major training events and
participates as a trainer as needed.

     5. Coordinates with the Outdoor Activity Governance Committee
          (OAGC) Training Task Force including conference calls, meetings,
budget management, and reporting back to the OAGC and other committees.

     6. Evaluates and refines training sessions and trainers.  Sets up
formal
mechanisms to collect participant feedback regarding training content and
conduct.  Periodically reviews training courses with senior management and
volunteers.  Refines training courses as needed.  Works to enhance
individual
trainer skills and replaces trainers as needed.

     7. Attends meetings of the GCOC, ICO, NO, and Outdoor Activities
Governance
Committees as needed.  Attends other relevant meetings and all major
training
events, traveling extensively (up to 25%). Attends outdoor activity risk
management conferences and training sessions.  Participates on or leads an
outing in each of the three programs every year.

     8. Performs miscellaneous duties as required.

     Knowledge & Skills:

     -- Bachelors degree in Education, Outdoor Recreation, or related field
or
the equivalent combination of education and experience.

     -- One year experience in training or education

     -- Knowledge of outdoor recreational activities and formal outdoor
leadership training (or able to attend such training).

     -- Wilderness First Responder certification (or able to obtain
certification).

     -- Ability to work independently and apply judgment in the
           interpretation and application of outings policies.

     -- Excellent written and oral communications skills, including public
speaking and teaching ability.

     -- Demonstrated ability to interact effectively with volunteers,
staff, and
the public.
