OFFICIALS ON SCENE OF PAINT SPILL NEAR IOWA CITY

IOWA CITY – State and local environmental and law enforcement officials were on the scene today of a semi truck accident that left the driver injured and dumped 62,000 pounds of paint material into a tributary of the Iowa River in eastern Iowa. 
 
The accident was reported to state environmental officials around 1:53 p.m. It happened near mile marker 244 of westbound Interstate 80, just outside Iowa City. State environmental officials said the truck’s cargo, 62,000 pounds of paint chips and paint residue, as well as an unknown amount of diesel fuel, spilled into the small, shallow stream. 
 
Clean-up workers dammed the spill downstream, and officials are considering clean-up options. 
 
“Our primary concern is keeping it from reaching the Iowa River,” said Terry Jones, an environmental specialist with the Iowa DNR. 
 
The driver was transported to University of Iowa Hospitals in Iowa City. His condition and name was unknown at this time. 
 
The accident and spill is still under investigation.
