Locating wind turbines is a well researched process. Getting absolutely the
most dependable steady wind possible is very important to the effficiency of a
wind farm. I have not seen turbines atop wooded ridges but that may be the
case in areas east of the Mississippi river. There have been suggestions of
utilizing our national forests as areas to develop into wind farms. This is an
inappropriate us of our national forests and Sierra Club objects to siting wind
farms in forests and park areas.
Opponents of wind farms complain about their ugliness and their
incompatibility with bats and birds. I do not hear anyone complaining about the thousands
of road kills each day throughout the country from automobiles. Deer, birds,
foxes, butterflies, and almost any form of wildlife you can name are destroyed
daily by auto traffic with narry a comment about getting rid of cars, trucks or
motorcycles that kill wildlife.
I do not advocate discontinuing the use of these forms of transportation and
neither do I advocate discontinuing building and using wind farms for
generating electricity. Everything has an up side and a down side and we have to make
intelligent decisions as we evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of
anything. My opinion is wind farm's clean energy far outweighs the unknown numbers
of birds and bats that are killed by them.  Jerry Neff
