ISLE ROYALE COMMENTS NEEDED: A vocal motor boat constituency around Lake
Superior is criticizing the National Park Service's plans to restrict
motorized access in limited parts of Isle Royale National Park. Currently
the entire wilderness park is open to motorized access, leaving passive
users no specified wilderness retreat. According to several activists
involved in the issue, passive users have only quietly supported the Park's
proposal to remove a small number of docks and restrict motor boats along a
limited stretch of the park. As a result, the onslaught of critical
comments from motorized users could result in the Park Service switching to
a weaker plan. According to Anne Woiwode of the Sierra Club Mackinac
Chapter, the Park's General Management Plan and Environmental Impact
Statement has been reopened for public comment until April 26. Review the
management alternatives and comment online by visiting
http://www.nps.gov/planning/isro/fgmp/fgmp.htm, or write Isle Royale
National Park, 800 East Lakeshore Drive, Houghton, MI 49931.
