FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: 2 August 2007CONTACT: Josh Dorner, 202.675.2384 Congress Should Not Rush on Weak Global Warming Bills Warner-Lieberman Bill Focuses on Needs of Industry, Not Environment Statement of Carl Pope, Sierra Club Executive Director "There have now been a variety of bills introduced in both the House andthe Senate designed to regulate and reduce global warming emissions on aneconomy-wide basis. Unfortunately, the Warner-Lieberman bill introducedtoday is yet another entrant that falls short of the finish line in therace against global warming. "We believe that any global warming bill passed by Congress must go farenough, fast enough to avert the most catastrophic effects of globalwarming. According to scientists, this means we need to reduce our globalwarming emissions 80 percent by 2050--an achievable average annualreduction of 2 percent. Both the Boxer-Sanders bill in the Senate and theWaxman bill in the House meet this challenge. "The Warner-Lieberman proposal and others are oriented toward meeting theneeds of the coal, utility and auto industries. Congress should insteadfocus on proposals like Boxer-Sanders and Waxman that better meet the needsof communities, families, and the environment." # # #
