Thanks to Wally and Pam for their legal work on this issue, and to many
Sierra Club members who wrote comments on this highway project and attended
meetings. In addition, local activists and naturalists Pat McAdams and
Glenda Buenger of Rose Hill and Diana Horton of the University of Iowa gave
their all fighting the original proposal.

The Leopold Sierra Group of SE Iowa has organized a tour on Sunday--please
join them if you can.

Jane Clark

Subject: Join us for a Fall Outing to the Nearby Eddyville Dunes

Eddyville Dunes Restoration of Sand Prairie Wetland Complex — a Rarity
of Soil and Habitat

This unique area bordering Wapello and Mahaska counties was the
subject of controversy a few years ago, when initial plans for
expansion of Hwy-163 threatened to go right through it. Thanks to the
efforts of the Sierra Club and other conservationists, the route of
the highway was shifted to spare the dunes. Now, conservationists are
working to preserve and restore the area.

The Leopold Group is sponsoring a
 Guided Nature Walk
 of the Eddyville Dunes on
Sunday, October 14, at 2:00 pm.
Carpool or take your own vehicle. We will leave from the Fairfield
Square at 12:30.
Please call Carole Simmons at 641-919-6145 for
 further details.
