ANTIFREEZE SOLUTION ENTERS FACILITY STORM SEWER AT FORT DODGE

MEDIA CONTACTS: Glenn Carper, (641) 424-4073, [log in to unmask]

Fort DODGE —Approximately 350 to 750 gallons of water containing 12 percent propylene glycol (antifreeze) was released to the ground in the rain when a contractor hit and broke a chilled water line at Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica. The spilled solution entered a facility storm sewer at 800 5th Street, Fort Dodge. It then entered a city storm sewer and was discharged to the Des Moines River about one-quarter mile away.

A dike was built on the facility’s property to prevent an additional release of the solution. The facility notified the Iowa DNR as soon as the spill was stopped.

Because antifreeze easily mixes with water, the solution will have no impact to the Des Moines River. No fish were killed.
