Probably most of you, especially in east and northeast Iowa, know about
garlic mustard, the non-native plant that is invading Iowa's woodlands. It
can spread rapidly, and choke out wildflowers and desirable native
vegetation of the forest floor. It is widespread in eastern Iowa, and is
showing up in many other parts of the state.

Ashworth Park in Des Moines is an ideal place to see the devastation an
unchecked infestation can bring. For the past two years the Central Iowa
Sierra Group has organized a workday to pull it--but there is plenty more to
pull or cut. This year we will have a full workday on June 8th, from 9:00
a.m to 12:00 and 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. Vounteers can come anytime and work for
as long as they wish. Wear long pants and long-sleeved shirts, and
gloves. We will have bags.

However, since there is more than we can possibly pull in one day, and since
it is already blooming, I hope to start right away. Some of us are meeting
at 9:00 a.m. at the park on Saturday morning, May 25, and also June 1. In
addition, I will be glad to work with any group, even just 2 or 3 people, on
weekdays, any time of day. Call (515-276-6359) or e-mail me if you can
help, and we can arrange a time to meet at the park.

Parking is south of Grand Avenue on 45th Street, just south of Ashworth
Pool. I hope many of you can come, on June 8th or any other day. For more
information, directions, or to tell me when you can come, call 515-276-6359,
or e-mail [log in to unmask]
