You would think so, but people who drive 20 miles per day have this "anxiety". It's pervasive. Part of why it's there at all is because GM, in their zeal to differentiate the Volt from the LEAF coined the phrase and hammered it home that "you have range anxiety and therefore you want a Volt". The media has been even worse, taking up the phrase and telling everyone that they have this malady. 


The Club should at least dispel this myth to its members and encourage them to drive an EV "if they need to drive at all".

I strongly disagree. Most of my customers have this so-called range anxiety when they first get the LEAF, but within a week or two of driving it, they realize the 80-100 mile range is more than sufficient for their needs. The limited range also encourages folks to not take unneeded trips thereby reducing VMT.


The Volt drivers have an interesting malady they call "gas anxiety". They are so focused on not using any gas with their 40 mile all electric range that they keep extraneous driving to a minimum, and seek out opportunities for charging so they don't need to use gas at all. If you go to the Volt forums, you'll see people discussing this all the time.

The Sierra Club's role with respect to EV's should be to beat the drum for shorter commutes, thereby reducing the "range anxiety" of potential EV purchasers and increasing the market for such vehicles. People who have range anxiety should not be in the market for an EV.

Do you really think that EVs re-enable it? I don't.


The BMW ad is just that.  But it's important to note that it is merely a "compliance car", that is, required in Calif if BMW wants to sell their ICE vehicles:

Not every article posted on the listserv is of interest to everyone - that's why there is a delete key.


The key to reducing climate change - if not land use- impacts - in transportation are the 3 legs that Mike frequently refers to  - EVs can be found in one of them.  I don't think that EVs exacerbate the VMT-reduction leg.  In fact, with their limited range, one could make an argument that it complements it by making for a more urban vehicle than others.
