Environmental Specialist


Background
The Waste Management Assistance Division is a non-regulatory division of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) serving our customers, local governments and business and industry throughout Iowa. Established in 1988, the Division has emerged as a leader in assisting clients to implement environmentally feasible solutions in pollution prevention, market development and waste reduction and recycling.

Job Description 
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Waste Management Assistance Division, has an opening for a key position within the Recycling Assistance and Market Development area.  This critical position functions as a member of the four-person recycling assistance team.  The position is responsible for recycling assistance, market development and special projects.

Responsibilities include
1) Overseeing implementation of Iowa's Beverage Container Control Act 
2) Serving as project leader for the division's  projects encouraging the purchase of recycled products,
3) Working with task forces and advisory groups to obtain customer input,
4) Assisting the Recycle Iowa Office on targeted market development projects, 
5) Informing and educating the general public on solid waste reduction and recycling goals, and
6) Assisting other division service areas as necessary.
 
Qualifications
Applicants must meet the minimum requirements for an Environmental Specialist which requires graduation from an accredited college or university with major course work in a natural science or a combination of education and experience as established by the Iowa Department of Personnel (IDOP).  Applicants must qualify for the IDOP solid waste selective. 
Qualified applicants should possess strong leadership and facilitation skills, effective written and verbal communication skills, solid computer skills, and strong interpersonal and analytical skills.  The ability to develop recommendations and provide direction is necessary.  Integrated solid waste management experience desirable.

Salary
Annual salary range is $29,452 to $44,179 dependent on experience.  The position provides full state benefits.  The selected applicant must successfully complete a six-month probationary period.
