SPILL HAMPERS TRAFFIC AT BUSY INTERCHANGE NEAR IOWA CITY

MEDIA CONTACT: Karen Grimes at (515) 281-5135

CORALVILLE - Drivers should expect delays on the I-80/380 Interchange
in Coralville Thursday afternoon after a truck carrying titanium dioxide
rolled over, spilling about 100 pounds on the northbound ramp to I-380.

The northbound ramp to I-380 from eastbound 1-80 was closed at about 1
p.m. Thursday with an anticipated opening of about 5 p.m.

The truck, carrying 850 50-pound bags of titanium dioxide powder,
rolled at approximately 12:30 p.m. Thursday while negotiating the turn
from eastbound I-80 to I-380. The driver is with local law enforcement
and did not appear to be injured.

Brent Early with the DNR estimates around 2,000 pounds of titanium
dioxide spilled, but most was contained in the trailer.. As of 3:35
p.m., Early anticipated clean-up to last another 90 minutes.

Titanium dioxide is a nonflammable powder used in paints and cosmetic
products. It is not hazardous to humans and the spill did not affect any
local bodies of water.
