A great LTE by an Iowa Sierran from the Des Moines Register this morning.

More assaults on environment

This anti-environmental administration has failed to create an energy plan
that relies on conservation and renewable resources.

Instead, the Bush administration wants to open our national parks and
refuges for oil drilling and exploration on the 100th anniversary of the
National Wildlife Refuge system. (Teddy Roosevelt would be outraged.)

In August, the Bush administration released its Clear Skies Initiative
weakening the Clean Air Act by allowing older factories to expand without
installing modern pollution-control technology. The Environ- mental
Protection Agency's latest report on the environment ignores the danger of
global warming.

The administration is pushing a "Healthy Forest Initiative" that would
increase logging in national forests under the guise of reducing wildfires.
The plan would grant more corporate welfare to timber companies.

As the media focus on the economy, health care and the situation in Iraq,
people are not seeing enough coverage of environmental legislation coming
out of Washington, D.C.

Gerald Neff,
Pleasant Valley.
