From what has been reported in the press there are no businesses that
want to take these contracts. The US rail freight industry has very
clearly stated that they have no interest. The only report I have
heard is that some European companies had expressed some slight
interest. Why would any business choose to buy the failing parts of
a failing business?

Folks,

>From what I understand, the current plan is thus:

There are three short distance train zones (California, Pacific NW (Eugene,
OR-Vancouver, BC) and the Northeast), Amtrak has enough cash to keep these
running.

Long distance trains:
Most will be contracted out to other firms. Service disruptions may occur but
will be minor. In fact, service may increase, including a new train being
proposed along the I-80 corridor, originating in Chicago.
