Recruitment Announcement -- Canyons of the Colorado River Committee

The Wild Planet Strategy Team (WPST) seeks to appoint one additional member
of the Sierra Club's Canyons of the Colorado River Committee (CCRC).  If
you would like to nominate yourself for appointment please complete and
return the application below by August 15, 2007. Self-nomination is
required.

The CCRC works to educate, support, and advise local activists and others
in designing and implementing policies and practices to restore and protect
the Colorado River canyon region known as Glen Canyon and related issues.
We promote stewardship and the right of the public to be involved in river
and land management decisions. Our web site is under development.

This committee is relatively new and continues to prepare to serve as a
resource to chapters and groups in the work to develop a campaign to
implement the Club's policies on climate change, Colorado River water
users,
and the restoration of Glen Canyon.

This committee will coordinate with the ongoing work of other Sierra Club
committees such as National Parks and Monuments, Rivers, Wildlife and
Endangered Species, and Global Warming and Energy.

Candidates for the CCRC should have at least general knowledge of southwest
public lands and water issues and the motivation to work on resolving them.
The skills and experience needed in developing this campaign cover a number
areas including: experience with the Club's planning matrix, knowledge of
complex water issues, knowledge of past successful dam removal campaigns,
population issues, and energy issues. No member of the CCRC is expected to
have expertise in all these topics, but all specialized expertise is
welcome, as is familiarity with Sierra Club policies and processes at the
national level. Candidates should have good management and social skills,
as well as political and strategic judgment, and be current Sierra Club
members residing in the United States.

Ability and willingness to use electronic mail and to participate in
conference calls (generally in the evening) are required as well as the
ability to travel occasionally to meetings or conferences. Candidates need
to consider their ability to contribute time and effort to CCRC
participation in addition to ongoing commitments.

CCRC meets monthly by telephone conference call and annually in person.
Please note that the issues are complex. Political considerations and
projected climatic conditions have created an urgency of both opportunity
and challenge.

A primary responsibility of this committee is the development of a campaign
that takes into account the complex and sometimes controversial legal,
political and scientific issues affecting management of Glen Canyon Dam and
the Colorado River through Grand Canyon. The committee must continue to
demonstrate diplomacy, consideration of a broad array of views, creative
ideas, enthusiasm, and determination to be successful in moving the Club
toward the goals it envisions.

Consultation with the chapters in the Colorado River basin is one important
aspect of this committee.  Restoring Glen Canyon is a national policy of
the Sierra Club and an issue of national scope and importance, in part 
because
of the effect of Glen Canyon Dam on the Grand Canyon and the overall demand
for water in the dry Southwest.  Activists both within and outside the
Southwest region are encouraged to apply.

and Wade Graham (CA).  WPST Liaison is Ed Dobson (UT). Staff Liaison is
Rob Smith (AZ).

Sierra Club of Canada (SCC) members are not eligible to apply to this

required for SCC members to be appointed as liaisons or members to CGC and
its subentities.

Appointment to the CCRC will be made by the WPST, based on applications and
phone interviews with prospective candidates. The WPST deals with public
and private land and water management issues, including existing special
designations such as national parks, wilderness, wild rivers, and wildlife
