Lee County Revisited

From the Des Moines Register, Tuesday, January 25, 2000
Appointment sparks criticism

Some Lee County residents are upset because the county Board of Supervisors
tried to appoint one of its own members to the county's conservation board.

The supervisors appointed Matt Mohrfeld after the conservation board turned
down a $100,000 offer from Alliant Energy to allow a transmission line
across the county-owned Amborn-Pagin wildlife area.

The board refused Alliant's offer on the advice of attorneys, according to
director Tom Buckley.

Citing the lack of information county officials received on the issue,
supervisor Tracy Vance suggested appointing Mohrfeld.

In the face of public protest, the supervisors agreed to delay the
appointment until after February's conservation board meeting.

Some members of the Iowa Chapter have been following this issue for almost
2 years -- it was a Chapter ExCom agenda item in February 1998. At that
time the Chapter ExCom requested that a letter opposing the power line
through this wildlife area be written.
