A MUTED CELEBRATION
How to celebrate Yellowstone's 130th birthday when park rangers are forced
to exchange party hats for gas masks? Last year, citizen outrage over
exhaust and other snowmobile impacts had little effect on an administration
determined to keep snowmobiles in our first national park. But recent
images of rangers wearing respirators clearly underscore what ten years of
science has shown and a growing majority of newspapers and Americans
understand: the special interest of the snowmobile industry should not hold
Yellowstone hostage. How best to celebrate? Tell the Park Service that
wildlife, clean air, and tranquility matter more than the bottom line of
