CALL FOR APPLICATIONS: SMART ENERGY SOLUTIONS INITIATIVE COMMITTEE
The Sierra Club's Conservation Governance Committee is seeking applications for an opening on the Smart Energy Solutions CIC (SES). Desired qualifications include knowledge of energy issues, but SES is primarily a campaign planning committee. (The Global Warming and Energy Committee recommends club policy.) Conservation campaign experience and an eagerness to get involved in SES work are highly desired.
For the past two years, the SES has solicited proposals and then funded various projects, working with chapters and other entities to refine and implement them. SES committee members have a follow-up role to help make sure that the funded projects work. As part of the Conservation Governance Committee structure, SES also has a broad charge to help plan and lead the Club's Smart Energy Solutions Initiative in general.
Initial appointments are for a period of 2 years, and club term limits limit the length of service to six years maximum. Please review the material below regarding the mission, projects, qualifications and responsibilities of the committee. If you would like to apply for membership, send the completed application to David Scott at the address below.
Email applications are preferred. If you send your application by email, please put "Initiative Committee application" in the subject line. If you know of someone who would be a strong candidate, please forward this message to that person.

THE DEADLINE TO RECEIVE COMPLETED APPLICATIONS IS MAY 1, 2007
EXPECTATIONS OF ALL CONSERVATION INITIATIVE COMMITTEES:
Conservation Initiative Committees are composed of 5-9 volunteers and assigned staff. The SES CIC develops a workplan that includes action objectives and policy outcomes covering the broad issue areas identified by the Conservation Governance Committee and the Board. The initiative committees identify strategic opportunities and then work with the relevant national, state and local Sierra Club entities to assemble work teams to put together winning plans and the resources to carry them out. They then evaluate the projects that are funded and report back results to the CGC and the Board.
DESCRIPTION OF THE SMART ENERGY SOLUTIONS INITIATIVE
SES works at the international, national, regional, state and local level to curb global warming by encouraging clean energy options (primarily renewables and efficiency) and stopping polluting energy projects (coal-fired power plants, nuclear plants, etc.). It promotes programs to make cars and trucks more fuel efficient, provide more non-automotive mass transit options, and reduce automobile and truck emissions.
Three of the Sierra Club's 2006-2007 areas of national concern fall within the Smart Energy Solutions Initiative: promote clean electricity (renewables and efficiency); reduce oil demand (promote efficient/clean cars and other efficiency efforts); and stop the coal rush and clean up existing coal plants and air pollution. You can find more specifics in the SES 2007 Action Plan at www.clubhouse.sierraclub.org/go/committees/energyhq
Again, campaign experience and an eagerness to do the SES work are highly valued.
