There are action opportunities on this website and ways you can be
involved on all these issues. Phyllis

The new Alaska Report, August 2009, is now up on the Sierra Club website,
this is the URL:
http://www.sierraclub.org/arctic/alaska_report/2009-08.pdf

This issue will be printed and mailed to subscribers in the Lower 48;
it's on its way to the printer.

There is still time, before it's mailed out, for anyone on THIS list who
also receives it as a paper newsletter to "go paperless" -- just send me
an email that you're ready to go paperless. See the box at bottom of
page 2.

This issue calls for ACTION on two topics:

1. offshore leasing, the Obama administration has suspended the old Bush
plan and extended comments through SEPT 21. (see pp 1-2.

2. Clean water protection, in opposition to the recent Kensington mine
court decision that makes it ok to dump toxic mining wastes into our
nation's waterways. ( see p. 5.)

There are also articles on:
* our appeal of the latest Tongass timber sale,
* our campaign to "Move Alaska beyond coal"
* Pebble Mine proposal and its complex permitting process
* Glacier Bay park manager's effort to open the park to subsistence
* Cancellation of Yukon Flats Refuge proposed land trade
* And, last but maybe not least, my own description of our June raft trip
on the Kokolik River, in the western Arctic.

For anyone who might also like to view my photos of this trip, you can go
