WASTEWATER DISCHARGE IN INDIANOLA

INDIANOLA – The city of Indianola discovered a bypass of untreated wastewater this morning from a manhole on the city’s east side.

 

The city’s wastewater operator thinks the bypass has likely been flowing for at least one day, but does not have a good estimate of the amount. 

 

The discharge is in a wooded area near N. 15th Street and E. Boston Avenue. The city had crews working to cut through the wooded area to make repairs and stopped the bypass by midmorning. The crews discovered a large chunk of concrete had blocked the sewer line. 

 

Untreated wastewater has reached Short Creek located near a public trail in Nature Creek Park. Trail users might notice some odor. The creek flows into the South River, a tributary to the Des Moines River. 

 

The DNR will inspect the stream Friday afternoon to check water quality downstream and continue to monitor the clean up.
