As for wind offsetting coal, that's a thorny issue. The energy companies
maintain that wind can't be used to supply baseload. Wally Taylor has
written that the concept of baseload may be flawed. The issue of
offsetting seems to me to hinge on the importance of baseload.

What a wonderful gift.. I know he is an Independent now, but he was a
"Republican." How refreshing to see someone like that see problems and
work to correct the issue. It reminds me of Teddy Roosevelt bucking the
Timber barons of the Pacific Northwest with the Forest Service..
Can someone cite credible research that shows how much Wind Energy in
Iowa has offset Coal..?
Even Ames and Iowa State University .. where hopefully the population
might see the problems with Coal and the benefits of Renewables .. has
these massive Coal burning plants... The City burns 10% Refuse yes but
... when something is 90% Coal... it looks like Coal.. it smells like
coal... its probably Coal.. Has there ever been a study by any of the
Universities in Iowa to offset some Coal burning with Wind?

But we won't be successful in closing existing coal plants unless we can
credibly promote a transition to clean and renewable energy sources.
What I have heard from National staff and leaders is that the Club
recognizes this fact and they are going to stress that transition. I
hope the Bloomberg money will make a significant contribution to clean
and renewable energy.

The Club is hiring 100 new staff to
work primarily on closing existing coal plants around the

I'm sure you've seen the announcements of the donation from Bloomberg
Philanthropies (NYC Mayor Michael Bloomberg) to Sierra Club. $50M over
a couple
years, with $10M being c4 lobby funds and the rest for administrative
advocacy,
etc, for the Coal to Clean Energy Campaign. The Club is hiring 100 new
staff to
work primarily on closing existing coal plants around the country.
Things are
gearing up.
How many coal plants does Iowa have? The universities, the one in Mike
Gronstal's district, the monster one in Southern IA... ???
It's time to shut them down. Thanks for the helping hand, Mayor
Bloomberg.
Donna
