Maria Muldaur kicks off 5-city concert tour
Thicke to make cameo trumpet performance in
"New Vision for Iowa Food and Agriculture" concert tour

            Blues singer Maria Muldaur and Her Red Hot Bluesianna Band kick 
off a "New Vision for Iowa Food and Agriculture" concert tour in Bettendorf 
Friday, Oct. 8, to support Iowa Secretary of Agriculture candidate Francis 
Thicke's (pronounced TICK-ee)  campaign. The first of five concerts will be 
held Friday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at The Muddy Waters, 1708 State St. in 
Bettendorf.
            Thicke, who studied orchestral trumpet performance as a graduate 
student before going on to earn a Ph.D. in agronomy and soil science, has 
been practicing his trumpet between campaign stops to promote his vision for 
Iowa food and agriculture production that makes farms more profitable, while 
creating sustainable local economies. He'll join Muldaur and her band on the 
trumpet for a cameo performance during the five-city tour that also includes 
stops in Clinton, Iowa City, Cedar Falls and Des Moines.
            Best known for her 1970s pop staple "Midnight at the Oasis," 
Muldaur has become an acclaimed interpreter of American roots music, with a 
range of genres from blues, early jazz and R&B to gospel, folk and country. 
She came into her own as a roots music stylist in the 1990s when she became 
fascinated with Louisiana blues sound and began recording albums that 
critics praised as the best of her 46-year career.
            Her "Yes We Can" album in 2008, a powerful selection of protest 
songs, was co-opted by the Barrack Obama campaign and became a universal 
anthem against the status quo. The collection of songs reveals the strong 
social conscience that drew Muldaur to Thicke's campaign for safe local 
foods, economic justice on family farms, and renewable biofuels to make 
Iowa's family farms more efficient and self-sufficient.
            Unless otherwise noted, tickets for the concerts are $25 in

FRANCIS THICKE BACKGROUND:
            Francis Thicke has been a full-time farmer for 27 years, is a 
scientist with a Ph.D. in agronomy/soil fertility, and has worked in the 
past at the USDA in Washington, D.C., where he served as National Program 
Leader for Soil Science. A frequently consulted national expert on 
agricultural sustainability, Thicke and his wife, Susan, own and operate an 
80-cow organic, grass-based dairy near Fairfield, where they process milk on 
the farm into bottled milk, yogurt and cheese marketed locally through 
Fairfield grocery stores and restaurants.
