Iowa Wildlife Center
Year of the Turtle!

Date:
Sunday, May 8, 2011 (Mother's Day!)
Time: 1:00-5:00 p.m.

Location:
Iowa Wildlife Center's WildWay
(1/2 mi. south of Ledges State Park)

Who? Iowa Wildlife Center, Iowa State University Wildlife Extension, Blank
Park Zoo, Iowa Herpetological Society & more!

What? A family-friendly event to learn more about turtles of Iowa and around
the globe, the conservation threats to these animals, and actions we can
take to better conserve Iowa's turtles.

Why Now? 2011 has been proclaimed as the Year of the Turtle by the
International Union for the Conservation of Natural Re-sources. We want to
draw attention to the conservation threats facing turtles.

Why Mothers' Day? Turtles have played roles in Native American creation
myths and the fact that "mother" turtles are at in-creased risk of some
conservation threats, such as that posed by roads.

Event Activities:
For adults:
   Turtles of Iowa
Impacts of a 2010 River Oil Spill
   Iowa's Turtle Regulations
Turtle Conservation Activities of the Blank Park Zoo

For children and families:
   Story circle with turtle-themed stories
   Child-friendly turtle talk
   Turtle rehabilitation activity
   Turtle songs & crafts
   Live turtle display

We will hold two silent auctions and sell turtle-themed treats during the
event to raise funds for The Iowa Wildlife Center's "Raise the Ribs"
building campaign! Please plan to join us!
