Iowa environment chief advocates land stewardship, cooperative approach

Land stewardship and incentives to reduce agricultural pollution should
characterize Iowa's environmental priorities, the state's top environment
official says in the new edition of the "Iowa News & Views" cable
television
series, which appears the weeks of Jan. 31 and Feb. 7 throughout the state.
Paul Johnson, director of the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, talks
with host Joe Bolkcom.

Johnson wants the Iowa Legislature to appropriate money to pay farmers to
plant protective buffer strips along streams and rivers, money the state
could use to win federal matching funds to expand the program. Buffer
strips, manure management and other programs are aimed at protecting and
improving Iowa's surface water quality.

"Iowa News & Views" is a 30-minute program featuring information and
discussion of state and community issues, and airs each week on cable
systems serving 500,000 homes. Viewers can learn more about the show by

For more information, contact Joe Bolkcom at (319) 337-6280.
