Sierra Club Praises Historic Sotomayor Confirmation

Washington, D.C. – The Sierra Club today praised the United States Senate for the historic confirmation of Justice Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court.

"We congratulate Justice Sotomayor on her historic confirmation to the high court, where her extensive experience will serve her well," said Sierra Club Executive Director Carl Pope. "With many of our nation's bedrock environmental laws under constant attack, Supreme Court decisions in coming years will continue to have far-reaching environmental implications."

"As a Puerto Rican, I am very proud of the confirmation of Justice Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court of the United States," said Sierra Club Puerto Rico Chapter President Ángel Sosa. "I have absolutely no doubt that Justice Sotomayor will deliver justice impartially. Today's confirmation of someone with such strong roots and life experience pushes the entire country closer to racial integration. Sierra Club of Puerto Rico hopes that Justice Sotomayor's presence will also raise the environmental sensitivity of the Supreme Court about the problems communities throughout the country face every day."
