2. DNR to hold illegal dumping community forums statewide July 17 and 18
TECHNICAL COMMITTEE ON NUTRIENTS TO MEET JULY 19 IN AMES

AMES -- The Nutrient Science Advisory Committee will meet in Ames July 19 to
discuss necessary changes in Iowa's water quality standards.
The meeting will be held in Room 257 of Science I on the Iowa State
University
campus from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Committee members will make recommendations to the Department of Natural
Resources and ultimately to the Environmental Protection Commission for
science-based nutrient criteria in Iowa's lakes and streams.
The Nutrient Science Advisory Committee was formed to provide scientific
input
on establishing nutrient standards for Iowa lakes. Technical issues
scheduled
for discussion and input at the upcoming meeting include the draft
recommendations for transparency and chlorophyll-a, a pigment in plants that
can
indicate the amount of algae present in water; the toxicity of
cyanobacteria;
and the definitions of aquatic life.
The agenda follows:
1. Review June 26 action items related to transparency and chlorophyll-a
criteria.
2. Working lunch
3. Initiate draft of recommendations for transparency and chlorophyll-a.
4. Review cyanobacteria toxicity information
5. Discuss aquatic life definitions, descriptions
6. Review of action items and future meeting schedule.
The meeting is open to the public for observation. The DNR will accept
public
comments at a later date when lake nutrient standards are proposed by the
Environmental Protection Commission.

DES MOINES - The DNR will host three public forums across the state to
discuss
issues related to illegal dumping prevention and clean-up on July 17 and 18.
The public is encouraged to attend the forums and give testimonials,
presentations and comments regarding illegal dumping and its impacts in
Iowa.
Information provided will be used to help build a new resource management
policy
and legislative proposal for Iowa.
Forum locations include:
