No one said passing landmark climate legislation was going to be easy.

Senators John Kerry (D-MA), Lindsey Graham (R-SC), and Joe Lieberman
(I-CT) were set to introduce a climate and energy bill on Monday. This
bill had been months in the making and, among other things, would cut
America's global warming pollution 17% by 2020 and 80% by 2050.

However, a partisan dispute threatens to undermine our momentum for
action.

There are a lot of things we don't know about the future of this bill.
But there is one thing we do know -- without intense grassroots
pressure, this bill will not make it to the floor.

We need your help today. Here are 3 ways you can help right now:

1. Call your Senators and urge them to tell Senate leadership they
want to pass strong climate and energy legislation this summer.
You can call our toll-free Climate Action Hotline:
1-800-493-3393. Or you can use our online call-advocacy tool:

http://support.edf.org/site/R?i=q4O7YP1Bm8DYTMcE3UBjtw..

(See below for basic talking points)

2. Send an email to your Senators:

http://support.edf.org/site/R?i=b6hO7qbeh-eKeCKk6ftH9Q..

Urge them to support strong, bipartisan climate and
energy legislation.

3. Forward this email to everyone you know who cares about global
warming and the future of our planet.

-- Politics, Not Policy --

The most frustrating thing about this week's conflict is that it has
nothing to do with the substance of the Kerry-Graham-Lieberman effort
-- it is all politics.

This effort has been months in the making. It comes at a time when the
environmental, business, faith-based, veterans, labor, student, and
other groups and stakeholders are most engaged and committed to
passing a strong bill. And it comes when the possibilities for getting
60 votes in the Senate have never been better.

While this delay is certainly frustrating,our Climate Team has
been in regular contact with Senators Kerry, Graham, and Lieberman as
well as with Senate Majority Leader Reid and the White House working
with all parties to break the political impasse.

There is hope we can move forward, but only if you help us apply
maximum grassroots pressure on the Senate. This may very well be our
last, best chance to solve the climate crisis.

Please call or email your Senators today and help promote the
Kerry-Graham-Lieberman effort.

Thank you for your activism and support,
Environmental Defense Action Fund

Talking Points for Your Calls:

*  We need clear and decisive leadership on energy and climate;
* The bipartisan Kerry, Graham, Lieberman effort is our last best
chance to take decisive action this year;
* The KGL bill stands a strong chance to attract the necessary 60
votes in its current form;
* Since the House has already passed a bill, we have a tremendous
opportunity to actually get this done this year; and
* The Senate must pass a strong climate and energy bill to free
America from our dependence on foreign oil and to reduce the
pollution that causes global warming.
