DES MOINES – Iowans interested in providing feedback regarding proposed
revisions to disposal requirements for construction and demolition (C&D)
waste can submit written comments to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources
(DNR) until Dec. 1.
“C&D regulations are a concern because the existing rules and
laws pertaining to their management lack adequate protection for the
environment and are not equitable when compared to the rule requirements for Municipal
Solid Waste landfills (MSW),” said Alex Moon, with the DNR
solid waste program.
The DNR is specifically
requesting detailed responses and comments pertaining to any or all of the proposed
revisions.
Current rules, proposed
revisions and a memo explaining what the revisions intend to accomplish are
available at www.iowadnr.gov/waste/policy/cdlandfill.html.
Those wishing to provide
written comments should submit them by Dec. 1, 2008 to the following address:
Iowa Department of
Natural Resources
Attn: Alex Moon
502
East 9th St.
Des
Moines, IA 50319
If the comments warrant
further discussion, the DNR will schedule public meetings to discuss in greater
detail.
After gathering comments,
the DNR will present the recommendations to the Environmental Protection
Commission (EPC) for review. A draft rule revision will then be provided to the
EPC at its January 2009 meeting.
