I have taken Amtrak from Mt. Pleasant to Washington, D.C twice in the last couple of years. It is about 25 hours one way. I took the train for several reasons. Primarily because if I support passenger rail I should walk the walk (or ride the ride). And it was less expensive. It is also a lot less hassle: no TSA, take several bags on, lots of room in and around the seat, you can get up and walk around, and food on the train. Another advantage is that it costs less than flying. And as Mr. Anderson said below, I could do work on the train as I was riding so there really was very little waste of time.
It would be competitive with flying if there were more trains and more routes and the trains were high speed.

AMY GOODMAN: And so, how long did it take you to go from England to Poland by train?
KEVIN ANDERSON: It’s 23 hours from Manchester to arrive in Warsaw. But during that, we got a night’s sleep, and we managed to work the rest of the time on the train and have a meal. So, you know, it’s civilized, comfortable form of travel.

FYI: No one can go to Des Moines, Iowa, USA by passenger train from ANYWHERE!--tOM . . .OOPS CANCEL caps lock--Tom :) (Yes, there are freight trains, but side-door boxcars have mostly been replaced by containers.)

OK, so maybe it's only a couple of scientists, but still.... Worth reading.
