Delegates to the annual meeting in San Francisco last week received this
alert from the Florida Chapter. For more information, contact Frank
Jackalone, Sierra Club Florida Office, (727)824-8813.

The Clinton/Gore Administration is about to consider allowing a major
commercial airport to be built on the edge of two national parks--Biscayne
and Everglades. A meeting scheduled last week between Vice President Gore
and local airport proponents was cancelled because of Hurricane Floyd, but
may soon be rescheduled.

The proposed airport at Homestead, Florida, lies just 1.5 miles from
Biscayne National Park and 8.5 miles from Everglades Nationl Park and
adjacent to the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. It would be the
largest commercial airport next to a national park in the United States,
hosting 236,000 flights per year...that's a plane every few minutes. The
federal property is a former Air Force Base, destroyed by Hurricane Andrew
in 1992. Miami-Dade County has documented plans for the facility to be
Miami's "JFK."

The Administration is also seriously considering the permitting of a
commercial space port, which would pose similar noise, water, and air
pollution problems, at the Homestead site

PLEASE IMMEDIATELY PHONE OR E-MAIL Vice President Gore's office with the
following message: "I urge the Clinton/Gore Administration to protect
Everglades
and Biscayne National Parks by NOT conveying the Homestead Air Force Base
for
commercial aviation or space port uses. Such uses will cause unacceptable,
permanent impacts to these treasured national parks as well as the Florida
Keys
National Marine Sanctuary."

Vice President Al Gore - Phone: (202) 456-6224
