RESOURCE ISSUES HIGHLIGHTED AT EPC-NRC MEETING JANUARY 16; ADDITIONS TO JANUARY 15 AGENDA INCLUDES UPDATED RECREATIONAL USE ASSESSMENT PROTOCOL

MEDIA CONTACT: Karen Grimes at (515) 281-5135.

DES MOINES –Key natural resource issues facing the state will be discussed at the joint meeting of the Environmental Protection and Natural Resource Commissions Jan. 16.

Available resources, current strategies and specifics of the Department of Natural Resources’ work with climate change, water quality, water quantity and deer management will be addressed by DNR staff members. The DNR’s management team will present the director’s top 10 priorities and legislative communications.

Commissioners will also be updated on the work of a legislatively-appointed advisory committee that is exploring sustainable funding for Iowa’s natural resources.

The joint meeting will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the fourth floor conference room of the Wallace Building, 502 East Ninth St., Des Moines.

In addition, two new items have been added to the Environmental Protection Commission’s regular meeting on Jan. 15 in Urbandale. The items are a contract with the University of Iowa Hygienic Laboratory and a proposed contested case decision.

On Friday, the DNR posted an update to the proposed protocol to be used in assessing recreational uses of Iowa’s rivers and streams. The update was completed after a subcommittee of the commission met in December. Commissioners will discuss the revised version Jan. 15, and it is available on the DNR Web site under commissions and boards at www.iowadnr.gov/boards.html.

The commission also set a 1 p.m. appointment with petitioners who asked for adoption of an antidegradation policy for Iowa waters. Discussion on the final air quality rule for grain elevators will be heard at 2:30 p.m.
