Here is a response to the email that hit the listserve last week
about the Walmart in Decorah.  Cynthia Kay use to live in Iowa City
and was an active member with our group.  She and her significant
other do a lot of work with I-Renew.  I forwarded our list message to
her and the following is her reply.  If anyone wishes to contact

Hi Rex,

Yes, in fact it is currently the hottest issue in town. There is a
"movement" called "Community for Responsible Development" that formed
over a year ago to combat this project.

At the current time, the Planning and Zoning board are beginning to
meet to change the Flood Plain ordinance in order to let Walmart in.
They are already here, they want to build a Super Walmart right along
the river, which in fact, did flood over the last month.

It has been a long hard battle.

There was an article in the DM Register about the DNR granting a
permit for Walmart in the floodplain of the Upper Iowa River.
Decorah City  Council can still reject it.  Has anyone followed  this?

Wal-Mart wishes to build a 168,000-180,000 square foot supercenter on
the banks of the Upper Iowa   River.  This is the same scenic river
designated by National Geographic to be one of America's 100 Best
Adventures.
