Recruitment Announcement – National Parks Committee

The Wild Planet Strategy Team (WPST) seeks to appoint a chair and up to
five members for the Sierra Club’s National Parks Committee (NPC). If you
would like to nominate yourself for membership on the NPC, please complete
and return the application below by August 15th, 2005.

The Committee will focus on the conservation, management, and long term
sustainable issues surrounding existing National Parks and Monuments,
including identifying threats and proposing solutions. This may include
close monitoring of the national parks Interior appropriations and budget
process.

The Committee will serve as a resource to Chapters and Groups in the work
to protect National Parks in their areas. The National Parks Committee
will coordinate with the ongoing work of other Club committees such as
Wildlands Campaign, Recreation Issues Committee, Wildlife and Endangered
Species Committee, Alaska Task Force and Energy . Staff liaisons will be
Maribeth Oakes (Washington DC) and Vicky Hoover (San Francisco).

Candidates for the National Parks Committee should have at least general
knowledge of National Park issues and the motivation to work on resolving
them. Specialized expertise is welcome as is familiarity with Sierra Club
policies and processes at the national level. Candidates should have good
management and social skills, as well as political and strategic judgment.
Nominees must be current Sierra Club members residing in the United
States. Sierra Club of Canada members are not eligible to apply. Please
contact Sierra Club Canada at [log in to unmask] for information on Canadian
participation in these committees.

Ability and willingness to use electronic mail and to participate in
conference calls (generally in the evening) are required as well as the
ability to travel occasionally to meetings or conferences. Candidates need
to consider their ability to contribute time and effort to National Parks
Committee participation in addition to ongoing commitments. If you are
interested in applying, please read and follow the instructions
completely. We are only accepting self-nominations, so, please, pass this
announcement on to others you think may have an interest.

Appointments to the National Parks Committee are made by the WPST, based
on applications and phone interviews with prospective candidates. The WPST
deals with public and private land and water management issues, including
existing special designations such as national parks, wilderness, wild
rivers, and wildlife and endangered species issues. More information about
WPST and its committees can be found at
