In the book "Mayflower" it noted that the pilgrims (men, women, and children) drank beer in Holland, England and on their voyage to America.. in 1620... the fresh water was so polluted... they looked to beer as a necessity.. 

We all know that Ben Franklin love a party.. and he lived to a ripe old age of 84, in those days (1790).. so he stayed pretty healthy.. Can we conclude it was because of the wine and beer... I hope so.. K

  I think Ben Franklin pre-dated Joseph Lister by about a century or so, so the part of the quote about "bacteria" is probably a stretch.
