Today is the day! Arctic drilling may be slipped
quietly into the massive budget bill, unnoticed by the
massive public majority that supports Arctic
protection. This is the closest struggle to date and
probably well into the future... Your phone call now
can help stop this sneaky attack!
TODAY the schedule was set for the House Budget
Committee to make its FINAL DECISION on whether to
include Arctic drilling in the budget this year.
TOMORROW, WEDNESDAY, MARCH 12, the House Committee
will decide. This is what we have been working on for
weeks! Now is the most critical time this year to
call Iowa Representative and House Budget Committee
Chairman JIM NUSSLE to ask him to keep Arctic drilling
*out* of this year's budget. The budget process is
meant as a streamlined way to keep the government
running, NOT as a way to sneak unpopular legislation
around the will of the public.
PLEASE PASS THIS ON far and wide to all your
friends, lists and colleagues in and near Iowa. It is
critical that everyone in support of arctic
preservation call to voice that support today! If you have ANY questions,
please email me,

MAKE THE CALL TO PROTECT THE ARCTIC REFUGE
The Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, one our most pristine national
treasures!
Call Iowa Representative and Budget Chairman Jim
Nussle by 202-225-2911. (For local numbers, please
see below. The Washington number will get the word to
him fastest.) This is your chance to let Chairman Nussle know that you think
he should support efforts to permanently protect America's Arctic Refuge
from oil and gas drilling, starting with keeping drilling out of the budget.
The majority of the American people do not want to
have America's last great wilderness ruined for 6
months of oil that will not be available for 10 years.
ACT NOW
Call Representative Nussle at 202-225-2911. This is
your chance to have your voice heard!

The coastal plain of the Arctic Refuge is the
biological heart of the last unspoiled Arctic
ecosystem in North America. Polar bears den on these
coastal lands while 130,000 Porcupine River caribou
travel hundreds of miles each year to the coastal
plain, where they deliver their young. Grizzly bears,
musk oxen, wolves, golden eagles and tundra swans all
call this unique place home for at least part of the
year.
The Gwich'in Indians call this area "the sacred place
where life begins." The Gwich'in are "caribou people,"
- the Porcupine caribou herd has been the cornerstone
of their culture and subsistence for 20,000 years. If
the caribou herd declines because the calving grounds
are disturbed by oil industrialization, the Gwich'in
way of life will be jeopardized.
