Talking Points:
Urge your Members of Congress to vote against any legislation with
language that includes drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
The so called "gas relief" package being debated by Congress is a Big Oil
bailout - it's taxpayer money that'll just flow back into Big Oil's
pocket while the industry is rolling in record profits.
Drilling in the Arctic Refuge will not provide relief at the pump. Arctic
drilling is not an energy solution - it's just another way of prolonging
America's oil addiction.
Drilling backers are talking about the Arctic Refuge to distract from
their own failure to put America on a path toward energy independence,
by, for example, making cars go farther on a gallon of gas.
Big Oil Targets Arctic Refuge Again
As Big Oil rakes in record profits and consumers shell out more and more
at the pump, some members of Congress are casting about for ways to keep
their poll numbers from plummeting. No surprise then that late last week
we saw a renewed call for drilling in the Arctic Refuge as part of a
package of proposed "consumer relief" measures.
Of course, it would take ten years to bring Refuge oil to consumers (if
oil is found at all) and savings would amount to just a penny per gallon.
But to Big Oil and its friends in Congress, this issue is seen as a
symbol of their power, and they will not rest until they show that power
by being able to drill in America's last great wilderness.
Your phone calls to Congress today and tomorrow are urgently needed.
