Something to read during the June 21 "blackout"

To: Sierra Club Staff and Leaders
From: Bruce Hamilton
Re: "Roll Your Own Blackout"

Many of you have seen or passed along an email, about "Rolling Your Own
Blackout" by turning out the lights and turning off electric appliances
between 7 and 10 PM on June 21, as a way to highlight the failures of
President Bush's energy plan. While the Sierra Club isn't involved with
this event, if you're participating as an individual, please keep in mind
the message that the Club wants to spread about the President's energy
plan.

Also, your friends might be interested in learning some long-term ways to
save energy after the June 21 "blackout" has ended. For tips on saving
energy -- and money -- quickly, cheaply, cleanly and safely, please see
http://www.sierraclub.org/energy/bush_plan/factsheet.asp

The Sierra Club's view of President Bush's energy plan:
President Bush's energy plan won't work, because it makes the wrong
choices. We can't dig, drill and destroy our way to energy independence.
Instead, we need a balanced approach that gives us quicker, cleaner,
cheaper and safer energy solutions such as energy-efficient technologies,
renewable power like solar and wind, and responsible production. President
Bush's energy plan will benefit his campaign donors in the oil, coal and
utility mining industries but cost anyone who buys energy or breathes air.
President Bush's policies won't clean up our air, prevent future energy
shortages or save us money.
