Please join members of the Sierra Club Iowa City Area Group in Earth Day
events on Saturday, April 22.
Our local group has teamed up with a coalition of about 20 groups, led by
the Johnson County Soil & Water Conservation District. Come for the entire
day or pick an event that particularly interests you. The tree giveaway
begins at 10:30 a.m. Four different types of trees will be available on a
first-come basis.

Hope to see you there! Rain or shine!

Johnson County Earth Day Celebration
Saturday, April 22, 2000
10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Johnson County Fairgrounds


10:00   Welcome/Celebration Commences

10:15   River City Pagan Community Greeting

10:30   Tree Give Away starts (400 Trees until Gone)

                Terry Robinson, Iowa City Superintendent of Parks and
        Forestry will be speaking on tree planting and care

11:00   Farmers -- Stewards of the Land, Terrence Neuzil, Farm
                Director, KCJJ Radio

11:30   Soil Quality Demonstration, Stacie Johnson, Organic Matters

12:00   Kenote Speaker: Mike Lehman, Johnson County Board of
                Supervisors, Perspectives on Conservation, Preserving Farmland
                and the Land Use Policy of Johnson County

           FREE LUNCH!  Provided by KCJJ Radio
12:15   Music provided by the Yahoo Drummers
1:00    Peace Corps -- opportunity to make connections on the global level
1:30    Iowa City Solid Waste Dept., Jeff Madson, Recycling
2:00    Celebration ends

Participants with demonstrations, displays, information and kids fun!

Carol Sweeting, Iowa City Water  -- "Edible Aquifer" and "Cool Hand Luke"
University of Iowa Press book drawing for over 20 books for adults and
children.
United States Geological Survey  -- The Enviroscape will be demonstrated,
which is an interactive display for kids and adults to show different
effects people, agriculture and businesses have on our waterbodies.
Johnson County Integrated Roadside Vegetation Manager Chris Henze will
demonstrate a hydroseeder and will have information available on the "Adopt
A Roadside" program.
Backyard Conservation display and information available by Johnson County
Soil & Water Conservation District.
Composting available by Stacie Johnson of Organic Matters
Earth Year 2000 T-shirt sale
Face Painting
Nature Hike Opportunities
Environmental Advocates
Sierra Club
Green Party
Iowa City Solid Waste will have a truck on display, provide information and
answer questions
 Johnson County Heritage Museum will have a program on archaeology
Shimek Elementary 5th & 6th graders will have environmental projects on
display and will be there to explain projects
Student Conservation Association will be there to give information on
conservation interns
