Subject: [GW-ACT-LEADERS] Urge your senators and House reps to remove nuclear loan guarantees from the proposed budget

Hi, all -

Pls urge the members of your Congressional delegation to remove nuclear loan guarantees from the President's proposed budget.

Suggested message:

Dear Senator/Congressman/woman,

I urge you to reject the President’s proposed increase of $36 Billion to nuclear loan guarantees. In fact, I urge you to entirely end the Title 17 program for nuclear power; ending subsidies to nuclear power entirely would release another $18.5B for reallocation in the budget.

Since 2005, when Title 17 began, estimated construction costs have skyrocketed. Today, it would cost over $50B to support construction of the intended 6-8 new reactors.

The tragedy at Fukushima has provided a stark reminder to the investment community that multi-billion dollar investments can turn overnight into much larger liabilities.

Several recent polls validate that a majority of Americans reject loan guarantees for new nuclear reactors. A March 2011 Civil Society Institute poll found that 73% of the American people oppose federal loan guarantees for new nuclear reactors. An April 2011 ABC News/Washington Post poll found that 64% oppose new reactor construction entirely.

Nuclear power is dangerous, dirty, expensive and slow. The future lies in clean energy options such as solar, wind and geothermal.

Please stop this drain of federal money to nuclear power, and instead invest in clean energy for the future.

Sincerely,
Your name here
