Natural History Weekend Returns to Lakeside Sept 11-13!

Natural History Weekend, a continuing education experience for adults,
returns to Iowa Lakeside Lab on September 11-13. Participants will explore
Northwest Iowa's landforms and ecology with leading local and Iowa
naturalists.

The weekend begins at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, September 11 with "A Watershed
View of the Iowa Great Lakes," a lecture by Dr. Lee Burras of Iowa State
University. Dr. Burras will provide an introduction to the glacial history
of Northwest Iowa and the distinctive natural features left behind by the
melting ice. The lecture is free and open to the public.

Field trips to local natural areas will be offered on Saturday. In the
morning, Dr. Burras will lead "Following Glacial Footsteps," an introduction
to the geology and soils of the Iowa Great Lakes region. Participants will
have their choice of three trips in the afternoon: "Butterfly Lives" with
Dennis Schlicht, "Grassland and Wetland Birds" with Lee and Nancy Schoenewe,
or "Stream Ecology" with Gary Phillips.

Following dinner on Saturday, Jason Titcomb of the Sanford Museum and
Planetarium will speak on "10,000 Years of Human History in Northwest Iowa."

Activities conclude Sunday morning with participants' choice of the
following field trips: "Botany and Butterflies" with Peter van der Linden
and Dennis Schlicht, "Birds of Woodlands and Savanna" with Lee and Nancy
Schoenewe, or "Wetlands" with Gary Phillips.

Registration cost $60, which includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner on
Saturday and breakfast on Sunday. Those wishing to participate one day only
may do so for a reduced fee.

Natural History Weekend is co-sponsored by the University of Iowa Museum of
Natural History. For more information, go to www.lakesidelab.org/News.html
