Transcript: High radon risk for energy-efficient homes
As more Iowans construct energy-efficient homes, they should keep the risks of radon in mind.
This is the Iowa Environmental Focus.
Energy-efficient homes are built with such tight seals that radon cannot escape. However, since radon comes through the ground, a tight home does not prevent the gas from coming inside.
High radon levels pose a serious risk: it’s the second leading cause of lung cancer, accounting for the death of 21,000 Americans every year according to EPA estimates. This issue is particularly important for Iowans as our state has the highest concentrations of radon in the nation.
It’s estimated that 70 percent of Iowa’s homes contain dangerous levels of radon. It is recommended that all Iowans test their home’s radon levels.
For more information about radon testing, visit IowaEnvironmentalFocus.org.
I’m Jerry Schnoor from the UI Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research.
Thank You.
End.
