Fish kill on Winnebago River being investigated
Estimate of fish killed near Eddyville completed
FISH KILL ON WINNEBAGO RIVER BEING INVESTIGATED
FOREST CITY - An extensive fish kill stretching approximately 13 miles
along the Winnebago River in north central Iowa is being investigated by the
Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
Fisheries biologists and environmental specialists were on the scene Friday
trying to determine the cause of the fish kill on the river between Forest
City and Fertile and to count the number of fish. It is believed that the
final number of fish killed will be in the several thousands and will
include several large sport fish including smallmouth bass, northern pike,
sunfish and channel catfish.

ESTIMATE OF FISH KILLED NEAR EDDYVILLE COMPLETED
DES MOINES - A total of 3,134 fish valued at $34,925 were estimated to have
been killed by a wastewater discharge last week near Eddyville.
The fish kill occurred on Miller Creek, a tributary of the Des Moines River
, when a pipe used to carry industrial wastewater from Wacker Chemical
Corporation to a plant owned by Cargill, Inc., broke causing waste water to
flow into the creek on Aug. 22nd. Approximately one mile of stream was
affected.
About half the fish killed were bluegill, but 428 largemouth bass and 204
crappies were also counted along with smaller numbers of walleye, channel
catfish, green sunfish and bullheads.
The DNR is continuing to investigate the fish kill. Restitution for the cost
of the fish will be sought from the responsible party or parties.
For more information, contact Kevin Baskins at 515-249-2814.
