Recruitment Announcement – Wildlands Committee

The Wild Planet Strategy Team (WPST) seeks to appoint up to two additional
members of the Sierra Club’s Wildlands Committee. If you would like to
nominate yourself for appointment please complete and return the
application below by January 7, 2007.

The Wildlands Committee works to educate, support, and advise local
activists and others in designing and implementing policies and practices
that protect and restore wildlands and special places. We promote
stewardship and the right of the public to be involved in land management
decisions. For a better idea of the work we do, please review the
Wildlands web site at http://www.sierraclub.org/wildlands/

This committee serves as a resource to chapters and groups in the work to
protect wildlands in their areas. The Wildlands Committee coordinates with
the ongoing work of other Sierra Club committees such as National Parks and
Monuments, Recreation Issues, Wildlife and Endangered Species, and Global
Warming and Energy.

Candidates for the Wildlands Committee should have at least general
knowledge of public lands and wilderness protection issues and the
motivation to work on resolving them. Specialized expertise is welcome as
is familiarity with Sierra Club policies and processes at the national
level. Candidates should have good management and social skills, as well
as political and strategic judgment. Nominees must be current Sierra Club
members residing in the United States.

Sierra Club of Canada (SCC) members are not eligible to apply to this
announcement. Please contact [log in to unmask] for information on the criteria
required for SCC members to be appointed as liaisons or members to CGC and
its subentities.

Ability and willingness to use electronic mail and to participate in
conference calls (generally in the evening) are required as well as the
ability to travel occasionally to meetings or conferences. Candidates need
to consider their ability to contribute time and effort to Wildlands
Committee participation in addition to ongoing commitments. If you are
interested in applying, please read and follow the instructions completely.
We are only accepting self-nominations, so, please, pass this announcement
on to others you think may have an interest.

Current members of the Wildlands Committee are: Norm Sharp, Chair (SC),
Alan Carlton, Budget Manager (CA), Edwina Allen (ID), Len Broberg (MT),
Clayton Daughenbaugh (IL), Harry Romberg (WA) and Jill Workman (OR). WPST
Liaison is Wayne Hoskisson (UT). Staff Liaisons are Athan Manuel, Melinda
Pierce, Rob Smith and Annie Strickler.

Appointments to the Wildlands Committee will be made by the WPST, based on
applications and phone interviews with prospective candidates. The WPST
deals with public and private land and water management issues, including
existing special designations such as national parks, wilderness, wild
rivers, and wildlife and endangered species issues. More information about
WPST and its committees can be found at
http://clubhouse.sierraclub.org/go/leaders/conservation/wpst/index.asp
