     Fredsters:

If anyone is interested in this EPA training, I may be able to help
with costs. Register, see whether you can get a travel scholarship
(from EPA), then contact me on or after the 25th (when I'm back from
vacation) to see about help with room&board. I don't have infinite
resources, but do have some unspent c(3) training assistance funds
that could help a few staff/leaders with costs.

This notice is kind of late, but I just received the workshop info in
     this morning's email.

CWN is passing on this message about a volunteer water quality
monitoring conference sponsored by EPA and the Center for Marine
Conservation in Washington, DC from October 5-6, 2000. Conference
registration is FREE and travel scholarships are available. Please read
on below.

Volunteer Water Quality Monitoring:Overcoming Boundaries

Workshop for Leaders of Volunteer Water Quality Monitoring Programs

October 5-6, 2000
Washington, DC

Volunteer monitoring has become an integral part of the effort to assess
the health of our nation's waters. Government agencies have limited
funds for monitoring and have found that volunteer programs can provide
high quality, reliable data to supplement their own water quality
monitoring programs.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Oceans and Coastal Protection
Division, in partnership with the Center for Marine Conservation, is
coordinating a two-day volunteer water quality monitoring workshop in
Washington, DC.

Who Should Attend
* Leaders of volunteer water quality monitoring programs
* Teachers conducting student water quality monitoring programs
* Local, state, regional, and federal agencies working with water
quality issues

Workshop Benefits
The workshops provide useful tools for all volunteer water quality
monitoring groups. Organizations new to water quality monitoring will
learn how to establish or improve monitoring operations, ensure the
quality of data collected, and enhance training efforts. Groups with
more experience in volunteer monitoring will be able to share their
experiences with sampling, monitoring equipment, fundraising, and other
topics.

> No Registration Fee!
> Financial Assistance Available

> To facilitate the participation of non-federal monitoring groups,
> limited reimbursement is available for travel costs.

Workshop Agenda
Oct. 5
Data Collection, Methodology, and Analysis
Defining questions/objectives...identifying parameters...quality
assurance procedures...field sampling...data analysis and presentation

program documents and sampling equipment to the workshop)
Display and share information about equipment used by monitoring
groups...how to use...pros and cons...cost

Registration is limited. Priority will be given to local
non-governmental organizations.

This project is conducted under Cooperative Agreement #CX827985-01-0
from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Office of Water,
Oceans and Coastal Protection Division, to the Center for Marine
Conservation (CMC). This is the third series of workshops conducted
jointly by the EPA and CMC.

The mission of the Center for Marine Conservation is to protect ocean
ecosystems and conserve the global abundance and diversity of marine
wildlife. Through science-based advocacy, research, and public
education, CMC informs, inspires and empowers people to speak and act
for the oceans. In all its work, CMC strives to be the world's foremost
advocate for the oceans. Headquartered in Washington, DC, CMC has
regional offices in California, Florida, and Virginia and field offices
in Alaska, Maine, Santa Barbara and Santa Cruz, CA, and the Florida
Keys.
