Garlic mustard was found for the first time in one area at the Ledges
State Park near Boone last year. I have an e-mail from the Audubon
member who pulled all he could find last year. He worked there again
last month, but our warm winter has resulted in an explosion of growth
there as in many other parks; he is not going to have time to get all
of it by himself and has asked for help. Even though there is more
mustard than last year, this infestation is still controllable if we
can get all of the second year plants before the seed pods ripen and
dehisce. I think all of you know how fast it can spread and how
devastating it can be to a park if it is not controlled. I don't want
to see this happen at the Ledges.

Would any of you in this part of the state have time to help next
Saturday morning, June 10th? We will meet at 9:00 a.m. in the parking
area on your right just inside the entrance to the park. If any of
you in the Des Moines area would like to carpool, let me know and we
will set a time and place to meet. Reply by e-mail to this address, or
call me at 515-276-6359. Also, if you think you may be able to come
but don't plan to carpool, would you let me know so we can be sure to
connect at the parking area--and so I can get more bags from the ranger
if we will need them.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
